Feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy interfere with taking in positive experiences, leaving only hopelessness. This workshop will introduce participants to understanding shame from a neurobiological perspective that helps clients relate to their shame with greater curiosity, discriminate the cognitive, emotional, and physiological components of shame responses, and transform shame-promoting cognitive schemas. Testimonials from local psychologists: "As an enthusiast of Dr. Janina Fisher, I hope you will join me at her one-day seminar Shame and Self-loathing in the Treatment of Trauma in Louisville to learn some of the very latest in trauma treatment. So often it is underlying trauma that creates the most challenging cases, cases in which we become stuck, or even overwhelmed at times. I have had the fortune of taking two of Dr. Fisher’s webinar series, and the models on which she draws are very much a part of my work with psychotherapy clients. Regardless of the primary nature of your caseload, I strongly urge everyone to consider coming to experience this training day. I find Dr. Fisher’s wisdom and integration of frameworks to be so effective with a very wide range of clinical problems. Dr. Fisher is a clinical psychologist and instructor based out of The Trauma Center, an outpatient clinic and research center founded by Bessel van der Kolk. She trains and consults clinicians internationally, and has worked alongside some of the very top pioneering clinicians in our field (e.g., Judith Herman, Bessel van der Kolk, and Pat Ogden). She integrates therapy models to be able to reach and heal clients with the most difficult diagnoses: complex chronic trauma histories, personality disorders, chronic suicidality, and dissociative disorders. The idea of Therapist as Neurobiological Regulator, for example, is a key idea based in our growing understanding that the brain and body are both essential components of effective treatment for many psychiatric diagnoses. Dr. Fisher is one of those presenters whom you leave with deep respect for her depth and breadth of knowledge and also newly equipped to engage more fully with your most challenging clients. Her presentation in 2014 was a completely full house, and this year’s Shame and Self-loathing in the Treatment of Trauma is sure to be rewarding." -Katie McBride, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist, 2018 Past President, KPA "I have benefitted enormously from Janina Fisher’s workshop and webinars. Her description and explanation of techniques for working with clients who have experienced serious trauma in their lives provides the necessary foundation for doing the trauma therapy required to help clients find lives worth living. Her teachings consistently have guided the work I do with traumatized clients. I am looking forward to the publication of her book on healing the fragmented selves of trauma survivors, which is due out in March. I highly recommend her teachings to anyone who is working with clients who describe chronic, severe trauma in their past." -Martha Wetter, Ph.D. Without a doubt, one of the best presentations I have seen on trauma and attachment. Dr. Fisher has worked with the greatest in our field--like Judith Herman, Bessel van der Kolk, and Pat Ogden and yet her talk was so down to earth and so applicable to my practice. You will be able to apply what you learn the next day. -Katie Dine Young, Psy.D. About the Presenter: Janina Fisher, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice, Assistant Director of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, an EMDRIA-approved Consultant, and former Instructor, Harvard Medical School. She is the co-author with Pat Ogden of 'Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment' and 'Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Self-Alienation.' She is best known for her ability to integrate neuroscience and attachment research into clinical practice.
