The Kentucky Psychological Association is hiring a new Director of Professional Affairs (DPA) to start in July 2024. The DPA is a key member of KPA’s leadership who serves as a support for members on practice related issues. This liaison role includes working with the KPA Executive Committee, DPAs from other State and Provincial Psychology Associations, APA staff as practice resources, and KPA’s Legislative Advocacy Committee.

This is a part time contract position with KPA and does not include benefits. Pay is $20,000 per year for 34 hrs/month of work.

The ideal DPA is a clinical psychologist who

  • Has familiarity with practice issues
  • Has strong written and oral communication skills
  • Would enjoy engaging with members to support and identify appropriate resources
  • Would enjoy connecting with psychologists across the country
  • Would enjoy representing and promoting psychology with multiple groups including the public, relevant government agencies, and multiple other professional venues

Time commitment
Average work time is 34 hrs/month. The hours worked are highly variable week to week depending on meetings, emails, etc.  The DPA reports to the Executive Director and will have at minimum a twice monthly one-hour meeting with the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Attendance at all KPA Executive Committee (4 per year, Friday afternoons) and Board meetings (4 per year, Friday afternoons).

  2. The DPA is responsible for communication with members who submit practice consultation inquiries directly. Responding professionally and in a timely manner is expected.

  3. The DPA is responsible for 4-5 newsletter submissions per year.

  4. The DPA will participate in APA’s State and Practice Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. Usually in early February: 5-6 days Wednesday through Saturday. This also includes the annual meeting of DPAs from other state associations.

  5. Serve on the Legislative Committee. Active participation on bill watching and strategizing especially during Legislative sessions and participate in weekly committee phone calls with KPA lobbyist during the legislative session.

  6. Serve on the Convention Committee and present a workshop relevant to practice related issues at the KPA Annual Convention and report out at the Annual Membership meeting.  (1st or 2nd week of November, 3 days: Thursday-Friday-Saturday. Generally alternates year to year between Lexington and Louisville).

  7. Additional evolving communication strategies such as podcasts and short webinars, coordinating member polls, leveraging APA resources, and participation in grant initiatives

Job Description Must be a licensed psychologist, preferred experience with inpatient SMI treatment. Under general supervision, the Director of Inpatient Forensic Services’ responsibilities are split between administrative, clinical, and teaching and supervision of staff, practicum students, and interns at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center (KCPC). Must be a licensed psychologist, preferred experience with inpatient SMI treatment. KCPC uses a multi-discipline approach (Psychiatry, Psychology, Medical, Social Workers, Correctional Officers, etc.) to complete forensic competency evaluations, competency restoration, and criminal responsibility evaluations for pre-trial patients. KCPC also provides inpatient treatment for individuals who have been adjudicated incompetent to stand trial and are held on a civil commitment order. “This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.”

Additional Job Description Oversees inpatient treatment for patients committed to KCPC under KRS Chapter 202C. Develops and oversees implementation of client-centered treatment plans for civilly committed patients. Works with community partners to build relationships in order to ensure a warm handoff to the community as part of safe and effective discharge from the hospital, when discharge criteria are met. Act as a liaison to communicate therapeutic progress to forensic evaluators to inform effective risk assessment and discharge planning. Will provide supervision for post-doctoral fellows, interns and regional practicum students. Competent and willing to perform competency and criminal responsibility evaluations for inpatient defendants at KCPC who are referred under KRS 504.080 and KRS 504.110. Documents services and care provided by timely completing various forms (e. g., attendance records, daily logs, shift/progress notes, incident reports, time reports) in accordance with facility and regulatory standards. Attends and participates in all required staff and service planning meetings and trainings. Identifies training needs of the inpatient department and provides training opportunities for staff. Other duties required for high-quality patient care that are rooted in best practices.
