This presentation for KPA will address one of leading crises among children and adolescence: school absenteeism. There are significant risks associated with school refusal and notably several protective factors during a critical developmental milestone. This presentation will guide clinicians through evidence-based interventions to increase success of school attendance through a functional model of school behavior. Skill level: Intermediate

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

  • Describe both short term and long term consequences for school absenteeism.
  • Assess reasons why their client refuses to attend school.
  • Prescribe treatment for specific school refusal behavior.

About the Presenter

Chelsea Mitchell, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist and associate director of the Kentucky Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (KYCARDS), providing evidence-based mental health services for children, adolescents, and families. She specializes in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Transdiagnostic Treatment (Unified Protocol), utilizing developmentally appropriate evidence-based interventions. Specialty areas include obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, phobias, body-focused repetitive behaviors, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She provides evidence-based research presentations both locally and nationally. Dr. Mitchell completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky and received her BA from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame Indiana.

CE Credits/Attendance:
It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who login more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.

This program is approved for 3.0 CE hours by the Kentucky Psychological Association.
