It Takes a Community: Using the JED Campus Framework to Address Mental Health Needs on College Campuses

In recent years, mental health needs among young adults have reached new highs and become a primary concern for higher education. Presenters will discuss the JED Campus Framework for suicide prevention and mental health promotion and will describe how this framework is being implemented on two Kentucky campuses (Bellarmine University and Centre College). Presenters will discuss data on student mental needs and describe collaborative, evidence-based strategies and policies to address those needs. Skill level: Intermediate 

Workshop Objectives: 

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

  • Identify the key components of the JED Campus Framework for suicide prevention and mental health promotion.
  • Describe three or more specific strategies for suicide prevention in higher education settings.
  • Apply one or more strategies discussed to other educational settings.

About the Presenters:

Gary Petiprin, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist, with a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Indiana State University (1993)He has worked over 30 years in university settings and has served as a counseling center director for more than 23 years, including appointments at East Tennessee State University (1998-2004), Hanover College (2004-2007), and Bellarmine University (2007-present). His professional areas of interest include: integrative therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, resilience, cultural diversity, gender issues, clinical supervision and suicide prevention.

 

 

 

 

Pam Cartor, Ph.D. is the Associate Dean of Bellarmine College and Associate Professor in Psychology, completed her B.A. in Psychology at Stetson University, her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), and her pre-doctoral internship at the Bingham Child Guidance Center in Louisville, Kentucky. She teaches the more clinically focused courses including Abnormal Psychology and Counseling & Psychotherapy. One of her favorite things about her job is working with students on career and graduate school preparation and she loves teaching the Professions in Psychology course and supervising internships.Her research interests have included parenting behavior and conduct disorder in children, clergy child sexual abuse, personality factors and student performance, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She is an active member of the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA) and currently serves as Treasurer of the KPA Board.

 

 

 

Ann Goodwin Ann Goodwin, LCSW, joined Centre College as a counselor September 2013. She assumed the role of Director of Counseling in the fall of 2015. Ann received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1998 and her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. Ann has experience as a mental health counselor at a community mental health center, a rape crisis/domestic violence agency, and an intensive in-home family services program. Prior to Centre, she worked for several non-profit agencies and in 2001 served as an international volunteer in Nicaragua. Ann is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Event Location
Virtual - via Zoom, attendees will receive instructions on accessing this workshop upon registration.

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who sign in more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
