Race-based stress is a global phenomenon, perpetuated by unconsciousness and an assumed “unbiased” cultural framing within Western culture. This training will define and unpack “Liberation Psychology” to help attendees recognize U.S. cultural norms as biased and in service of specific cultural goals, and how these cultural goals unintentionally harm non-white clients (and other intersectionally-oppressed populations) in psychotherapy. Next, attendees will receive specific instructions and follow up practices to develop 2 skills which overcome bias, improve clinical mirroring, and lead to intersectional compassionate attunement, body-focused mindfulness, and self-compassion. This workshop fulfills the 3 hours required for psychology professionals under KRS 319.032 on the topic of social and cultural factors that affect health, functioning, and quality of life. Skill level: Intermediate

Workshop Objectives

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

  • Discuss the breadth of Western/European cultural experiences which may be projected onto non-white clients suffering from racial stress.
  • Discuss practical mindfulness and compassion-based techniques which reduce the likelihood of projecting harmful cultural values onto non-white clients.
  • Assess how clinical mirroring is driven by a framework rooted in neuroscience and the mental health of the clinician.
  • Discuss the framework of liberation psychology, and how personal mindfulness/compassion-based practices increase the utilization of this framework.
  • Practice liberatory therapeutic approaches while not sacrificing preferred theoretical orientation or methods.
