Workshop 1: Adolescent Substance Abuse Assessment and Treatment: Best Practices for Better Outcomes, 3 CE

Presented by Geoff Wilson, MSW, LCSW, CADC

This workshop will provide attendees with an in-depth review of what commonly leads adolescents to begin to use drugs and alcohol. The differences between how an adolescent and an adult develop substance use disorders will be highlighted, along with the importance of early assessment and intervention for adolescents. Engagement with adolescents and their families in care and the use of evidence-based practices will be a focus of this training. Skill Level: Intermediate

Workshop 1: Objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Identify what typically leads adolescents to begin using substances and to develop a substance use disorder
• Discuss the differences between how adults and adolescents can develop a substance use disorder
• Identify important aspects of assessment and intervention strategies with adolescents
• Describe strategies to increase therapeutic engagement with adolescents and their families and to utilize evidence-based practices to enhance outcome.

Workshop 2: Assessing Appropriateness for Chronic Opioids and Risk for Abuse, 2 CE

Workshop 2: Objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Identify psychosocial risk factors for chronic opioid medication misuse or abuse.
  
  
• Identify signs and symptoms of opioid medication misuse or abuse.
• Describe differences between opioid addiction, psychological dependence, and hyperalgesia.
• Develop a psychological assessment method for determining appropriateness for chronic opioids, including follow-up treatment.
• Describe potential treatment options for individuals with opioid addiction or psychological dependence.

 About the Presenters:

Geoff Wilson, MSW, LCSW, CADC is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. He has been practicing in the mental health and substance abuse treatment fields in Kentucky for over 20 years. He was employed with The Ridge Behavioral Health System in Lexington, KY for the last thirteen years, where he held the positions of Director of Addiction Services, Director of Business Development and most recently as Director of Clinical Operations for their 110-bed inpatient psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment hospital and their outpatient department. He served as the president of the Kentucky Adolescent Substance Abuse Consortium for over 10 years. In 2004, he received the Robert Straus Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Substance Abuse Treatment in Kentucky and in 2008 was appointed by Governor Steve Beshear to the Kentucky Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors. In 2013, he was selected by NASW-KY as the Social Worker of the Year. He currently is in full-time private practice with The Offices of Paul Dalton in Lexington, KY where he treats adults, adolescents, and families.

Jonathan D. Cole, Ph.D., ABPP is clinical and health psychologist in private practice in Lexington KY. He is boarded in clinical health psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. He is a founding board member and president of the Kentucky Pain Society and former Secretary of the Southern Pain Society. He specializes in pain, headache, sleep, and bariatrics. He is published in the areas of pain and sleep. He is the clinical director of a health psychology training program for University of Kentucky clinical psychology doctoral students. He is the current founder and president of Bluegrass Health Psychology.

Amanda W. Merchant, Ph.D., ABPP is a board-certified clinical health psychologist at Bluegrass Health Psychology, Inc, a group psychology practice specializing in the treatment of comorbid medical and psychological conditions. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Boston University and her Masters and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago. She completed a clinical and health psychology internship at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellowship in Primary Care Psychology at the University of Massachusetts. She is a Past President of the Kentucky Psychological Association.

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received on/before September 13, 2018, will receive a 90% refund. Cancellations received between September 14 and June 17, 2018, will receive a 50% refund and cancellations between September. 18 and19, 2018, will receive a 20% refund.
