This workshop will focus on best practices in providing culturally sensitive trauma-informed care (TIC) and resilience-building practices with Hispanic and Latinx clients. Trauma-informed care helps clinicians create an atmosphere of trust, safety, collaboration, and choice in the therapeutic process. Whether you’re experienced, new to the profession, or have been practicing for a number of years, you are invited to explore culturally-sensitive trauma-informed care with Hispanic and Latinx clients – what it is, why it is important, how to use its frameworks and skills to enhance resiliency in the therapy process, and how to employ specific strategies to help clients. We will cover applied techniques and practices and address the following topics: intergenerational trauma due to systemic oppression, eliminating behavioral health disparities among Hispanic and Latinx community members by introducing a culturally-sensitive TIC framework in our work with these clients and agency staff by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into agency policies, procedures, and practices; examining the impact of the positive and adverse childhood experiences (PACES) framework on recovery, incorporating and understanding systems of oppression that foster intergenerational trauma. Skill level: Advanced

Workshop Objectives:

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Assess intergenerational trauma among Hispanic and Latinx clients and examine numerous cultural aspects and barriers that may influence treatment delivery and outcomes, such as language differences, cultural teachings that do not support seeking preventive healthcare services and mental health treatment, distrust or misinformation about mental health services, lack of transportation, and limited knowledge about the therapy process and the impact of trauma.
  • Summarize the culturally unique ways that Hispanic and Latinx clients may cope with and respond to trauma. These culturally based approaches often go unrecognized or unattended to in our westernized mainstream therapy approaches, so culturally responsive therapy practices will be highlighted.
  • Critique the impact of positive and adverse childhood experiences (PACEs) on their Hispanic clients’ health and the therapeutic process.
  • Apply a culturally sensitive TIC framework and resilience-building practices in their work with clients and agency staff by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into agency policies, procedures, and practices, in an effort to avoid re-traumatization.
  • Assess their roles as gatekeepers by examining the policies and practices of their agencies and their own cultural beliefs and practices on their Hispanic and Latinx clients’ recovery processes.
  • Apply TIC principles: (1) safety; (2) trustworthiness and transparency; (3) enhancing peer support; (4) collaboration and mutuality; (5) empowerment, voice, and choice; and (6) cultural, historical, and gender issues; while emphasizing the fostering of collaboration between clinicians, agency staff, clients and their family members and caregivers.
