Workshop 1: Evidence Based Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Presented by Jonathan M. Campbell, Ph.D.
Workshop will provide an introduction to principles of evidence-based assessment as applied to diagnostic evaluation of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Information will be presented within the context of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Skill Intermediate.   

Workshop Objectives

  • Workshop attendees will be able to discuss the guidelines and principles of evidence-based assessment as applied to the diagnostic evaluation of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Workshop attendees will be able to describe the guiding principles of comprehensive and developmental approaches to the assessment of individuals with suspected or confirmed Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Workshop 2: Autism...The Metamorphosis of a Diagnosis

Presented by Myra Beth Bundy, Ph.D.
How has autism changed since its first description? What does this mean for us as clinicians? What does it mean for people on the autism spectrum? Skill Level: Beginning.   

Workshop Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe at least two ways in which autism spectrum disorder has gone through a metamorphosis since its inception.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the impact of being labeled with autism or another disability diagnosis.
  • Participants will be able to identify 2 ways that they can perspective take with their clients with ASD or other diagnoses.
  • Participants will be able to define the concept of neurodiversity. Participants will able to identify supervision strategies for helping supervisees to process the effects of cultural contexts on client/patient interactions

Workshop 3: Understanding Depression, Suicidality, and the Autism Spectrum

Presented by Myra Beth Bundy, Ph.D. & Melinda Moore, Ph.D.
This presentation will introduce some of the special characteristics associated with autism spectrum disorders. We will discuss how these can interface with pressure to perform in our world and stigma associated with developmental and behavioral differences to increase risk for depression and suicidality. We will review suggestions for acceptance, support, and intervention. Skill Level: Beginning.   

Workshop Objectives

  • Participants will understand the deep characteristics of ASD and their impact.
  • Participants will reflect upon how stigma and medicalization can interact with ASD characteristics to increase risk for depression, distress, and suicidality.
  • Participants will review basic ASD-understanding strategies for crisis management, support, and treatment.

About the Presenters:    

 

Dr. Jonathan Campbell is a licensed psychologist and Professor in the School Psychology Program in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Campbell’s research interests focus on (a) early screening, psychological assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders, (b) attitudes of peers and school professionals towards children with autism into inclusive educational settings, and (c) evidence-based practices for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. He is a member of the Scientific Council for the Organization for Autism Research. His work in early screening and peer attitudes towards autism has been funded by the Organization for Autism Research. His research in the area of parents’ knowledge and awareness of symptoms of autism in young children has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has served as the Associate Editor for School Psychology Quarterly and is currently an editorial board member for the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Focus and Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, and the Journal of Physical and Developmental Disabilities. He has taught doctoral level seminars on autism spectrum disorders, pediatric psychology applied to school settings, intellectual assessment of children, and social-emotional assessment of children.

 

Dr. Myra Beth Bundy is Professor of Psychology at Eastern Kentucky University, a licensed psychologist, and an Autism and Developmental Disabilities Diagnosis and Intervention Specialist. Her graduate training was in Clinical Psychology at the University of South Carolina, where she received the Ph.D. in 1995, and her post-graduate work was focused on developmental disabilities. Dr. Bundy’s specialization in this area was consolidated through an internship at the University of North Carolina’s TEACCH Autism Program, a pioneering program in autism intervention. She was an MCH LEND post-doctoral fellow in autism at the University of Colorado Health Sciences John F. Kennedy Center. Some of her current interests include a focus on the idea of neurodiversity in the area of clinical-community psychology, as a means of moving beyond paradigms of stigmatization. Dr. Bundy serves as an ASD “Strategies in Action” Blue Ribbon Panel Member for the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence Disabilities, and is Coordinator of the EKU Developmental Disabilities Specialty Clinic, which provides opportunities for EKU graduate students to work with children, adolescents, and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities. She collaborates with EKU faculty from Occupational Therapy, Communication Disorders, and Special Education to direct the EKU Autism Spectrum Disorder Certificate Program, and she works with EKU students to conduct research in the area of autism. Dr. Bundy enjoys spending time with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families, and she is also interested in research and clinical practice related to adoption

 

Dr. Melinda Moore is a Licensed Psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Eastern Kentucky University. She holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Catholic University of America, where she trained in the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) and conducted research on CAMS. She regularly trains clinicians in CAMS, as well as advocates on behalf of suicide prevention in her role as chair of the Kentucky Suicide Prevention Group, Inc., a statewide suicide prevention nonprofit. She has conducted military suicide bereavement research at the University of Kentucky and suicide treatment research at the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville. Her interest in Posttraumatic Growth emerged from her own experience with suicide and the changes that experience created within her allowing for her current career path and personal interests and relationships.

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.

Cancellations received between June 3 and June 6, 2017, will receive a 50% refund and cancellations between June 7 and June 8 with receive a 20% refund.   No refunds available after June 8, 2017.
