About the Workshop
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is part of a movement in clinical psychological science that sees acceptance, mindfulness, and values as an essential addition to change-oriented cognitive behavioral strategies. This workshop will focus on skill building and case conceptualization from an ACT perspective. About the Presenter
Kelly G. Wilson, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of psychology at the University at Mississippi. He is Past President of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science and is one of the co-founders of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Dr. Wilson received his Ph.D. at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998. He joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi in 2000 where he established the Mississippi Center for Contextual Psychology. Dr. Wilson has devoted himself to the development and dissemination of ACT and its underlying theory and philosophy for the past 19 years, publishing more than 60 articles and chapters, and 5 books. He has central interests in the application of behavioral principles to understanding topics such as purpose, meaning and values, therapeutic relationship, and mindfulness. Dr. Wilson has presented workshops to more than 5000 individuals in 19 countries, and has participated as co-investigator in a wide range of research projects in the U.S., Sweden, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Romania.
Workshop Objectives
- Describe the six components of psychological flexibility from an ACT perspective.
- Learn key behavioral markers of psychological inflexibility.
- Practice in acceptance, defusion, present-moment focus, self-as-context, values, and commitment interventions.
- Practice at conceptualizing therapist obstacles using the ACT model.
- Learn case conceptualization from and ACT perspective.
- Practice at using the ACT model to understand and create a powerful therapeutic contract and relationship with your most difficult clients.
Audience
This presentation is intended for psychologists, social workers, professional counselors and other mental health professionals. Students are also invited to attend.
Registration
Registration Fees include lunch. If you would prefer to have lunch on your own you may deduct $25 from the fee.

The Shelby Campus is located near the NE corner of the intersection of Hurstbourne and Shelbyville Road. The building is located in the middle of the campus and free parking is available behind the building in the Green lot (no permit needed).
I-65 North: Take the I-264 (Watterson Xway) East exit. After traveling approximately 7 miles, take Exit 20A (Shelbyville Rd. E, US 60/Middletown). Shelby Campus is 2 miles on the left.
I-64 East: Take Exit 12B (I-264 East/Watterson Xway). Then take Exit 20A (Shelbyville Rd., US 60/Middletown). Campus is 2 mi. on left.
I-64 West: Take Exit 15 (Hurstbourne Pkwy., Middletown/Jeffersontown/ Shelby Campus). Turn right on Hurstbourne Pkwy. Travel approximately 2 miles to the intersection of Shelbyville Rd. (US 60). Turn left on to Shelbyville Rd. Campus is approximately ¼ mile on the right.
I-71 South: Take the I-264 (Watterson Xway) West exit. Take the Shelbyville Road East exit (US 60/Middletown). Campus is 2 mi. on left.
